How do you go about spreading the word about your blog? I've let friends and family know, who have said they are telling their friends, but I feel like word of mouth will only get me so far in buiding a readership.
What are your suggestions?

Network
The best way to get noticed is by participating in the blogosphere. Read a lot of blogs, comment on a lot of blogs, write posts linking to other blogs.
You can also cross post full posts here on BlogHer.com or write a really good teaser to your post and provide a link to the full post.
Interacting with people in communities here, twitter, facebook, or any other online community where people who might be interested in your blog congregate is also good.
It's all about networking. The more people you talk to, about their work and your own, the better.

I just posted this little blurb on Blogher about this very thing.
Here's the link.
There are so many ways to get yourself "out there", but networking and posting or commenting on other sites with similar content to your own is a very "white hat" (Google friendly) way to get relevant backlinks to your own blog. This, in turn, improves your page rank. The higher your page rank for your keywords, the more likely other folks with interests similar to your own will find your blog.

Good question...
You can trade links with blogs that are on similar topics to yours. Usually, smallish blogs will reply to you and be happy to do it. It can be a good boost to your readership to get a link on a blog that's even slightly more read than yours. Good luck!
