Christian the Lion

If you haven't heard the story or watched the video about Christian the Lion, get ready to be totally blown away. Especially if you're an animal lover.

Briefly, these two hippies men bought a baby cub from Harrods Department Store in London in 1969 and brought it home to live with them.

Well, just like that waterbed your parents bought in 1969, this too turned out to be not such a great idea. Within a year their cute little cub, Christian, weighed 189 lbs, probably wasn't housebroken, and couldn't live in the city any longer.

They release Christian the Lion in Africa and then returned to see him a year later. This is their story, told by those wise old sages YouTube and Aerosmith.

Isn't that remarkable? I think so, too. What they didn't show in the video is all of them sitting down for afternoon tea and biscuits later that day. Just kidding.

A friend you can't see is a friend indeed

Ben_at_the_table

My four-year-old son, Ben, has a new friend. His name is So-So. We all like him very much. He's imaginary. No, excuse me, he's INVISIBLE, not imaginary. I've been corrected a million times. I should have that straight. So-So is a ghost and he became my son's friend shortly after Halloween when Ben came downstairs and asked for breakfast for the both of them.

"Can you introduce me first to your imaginary invisible friend?" I asked, as I prepared Ben's oatmeal. "This is So-So, he loves oatmeal, just like me," he said as he pulled up a chair for him. I let So-So know right away that I'm the kind of mom who indulges her son's creative side. "Hello, So-So," I said as I bent down to shake his ghost hand, "I'm Mommy. Would you like some oatmeal?" Ben assured me he did.

Hmmm, invisible friend = invisible oatmeal. That was my thinking at least.

"There 'ya go So-So," I said as I set down a fresh bowl of pretend oatmeal. "Mommy! He wants real oatmeal!" Ben protested. "He's REAL!" So fine, I made So-So some oatmeal. Ben secretly ate out of both bowls, then declared they were both full and they headed upstairs to play in Ben's closet. (That's where ghosts like to play best.)

"I wonder how long I'm going to have to keep this up?" I thought to myself as I polished off the remaining oatmeal from the bowls. So-So went to school with Ben, to church, to the potty. They even slept together. "Give So-So a kiss good-night Mommy," Ben urges me. And every morning, two bowls of oatmeal. (Good thing I like oatmeal.)

Then one morning Ben pulled up two chairs, one for So-So and one for Knock-Knock-- his brother! Okay, I like to "nourish my son's creative side" (yada yada yada) just as much as any other mom, but three oatmeals? I think not.

"They can share," I said, and after much negotiation we all--all four of us--agreed: two oatmeals split into three bowls.

Kissing all three goodnight on Thanksgiving, Ben let me know that So-So and Knock-Knock's dog Coco was here to stay awhile. Yep! Extra dog food bowl! And their sister, TuTu, came as well. "When I asked how long the gang was going to stay, he said until he goes back to school. After that, it will just be So-So again.

So I packed up Knock-Knock, Coco, and TuTu on Sunday night and they were off to...wherever invisible ghosts and their dogs go. On Monday morning I pried my sleepy kids out of bed for school (after a week's vacation), and it turns out, So-So was far too tired to get up for breakfast.

Sitting at the breakfast table Ben had his favorite skeleton toy sitting in the chair next to him. "Skeleton, would you like some oatmeal?" I asked, I think, very hospitably. "MOMMY!" Ben screeched and rolled his eyes, "He's not real!"

Argh! Silly me!

I didn't sport a feather boa

Duckspoloriod_5

Here I am at the Ducks game last week. I'm wearing the pink Ducks' jersey my brother gave me and I'm hugging a Duck. My prediction at the end of last year has come partially true: I'm wearing a big Ducks' jersey, but it doesn't say "Ducks Chick" on the back and I didn't sport a feather boa. So, I haven't gone completely over to the other side.

Haven't a clue what I'm talking about? Here's what I wrote at the end of last season:

Hockey-me vs. Girl-me

I was utterly blissful sitting in our borrowed seats at the Honda Center--The Ramones blaring, Ruby's tri-tip slider perched on my lap, and oh, yes, my big orange foam finger patiently waiting for the first goal...

Throughout the game I found myself locked in an internal dialog that pitted my new-found hockey me (my
masculine self) against my girl me. Kind of like when you see a little devil on one shoulder of some poor
conflicted soul and then a little angel on the other. Neither of my "me's" is good or bad, just indifferent
to the other's point of view.

It went down something like this:

Girl-me: Oh no, that tri-tip must be a gazillion calories.
Hockey-me: Frick! Is that horseradish mayonnaise?

Girl-me: Is anyone going to clean up that blood on the ice? Someone is going to slip and fall...
Hockey-me: Drat! Blood? I missed it, what happened?

Girl-me: That's it Perry, playing well is your best recourse. Nice shot.
Hockey-me: Make them pay, Perry!

Girl-me: I think I will ask this nice gal in line at the women's restroom about the rules of the game.
Hockey-me: I think I'll just react with the crowd--scream insults, look peeved and motion fiercely toward the ref--find out what the deal is later on Adam Brady's Blog.

Girl-me: Oh, I hope his wife isn't watching.
Hockey-me: He totally deserved that body check.

Girl-me: I don't want Ben (our four-year-old son) to ever play hockey.
Hockey-me: I want Ben to be the best hockey player that ever lived!

It was an exhausting night, as you can imagine, with all the quarreling and posturing between the two "me's." It's going to get brutal next season when hockey-me insists on wearing a Ducks' Jersey with "Ducks' Chick" sewn onto the back and a bright orange and black feather boa around my neck.

See you next year, Ducks! I still love you! Get some rest, maybe take some time for yourself to reflect. Treat yourself to a massage. (That's girl me talking, alright.)

Now you're all caught up!

Orange County Daily Photo: The jetty in Dana Point

Silloute2

We spent today in Dana Point. We desperatly wanted to avoid anything shopping related and I certainly didn't want to post a picture of a mall and all that madness.

That's my family up there on the jetty. My son, Ben, had a breakthrough today--he was so brave! He climbed on top of the jetty even though he was afraid. Larry kept telling him, "Ben, do it even though you 're scared. That's what bravery is all about." After he conquered half the jetty, he wanted to climb everything in sight.

Emily would have done more rambling, but her high(ish) heels prevented true real exploration. So instead we wandered barefooted through the tide pools. I will post more pictures tomorrow.

Still taking a break from any real writing on my blog--just enjoying the holiday. Hope you are as well.

Orange County Daily Photo: Surprises

Kids_running

I love a surprise. When I downloaded my pictures I was so happy to see this seagull following my kids as they ran on the beach in Huntington.

That's all a kid needs--a big beach to explore.

With Christmas hot on my trail, catalogues clogging my mailbox, and commercials for Brats Dolls baffling my sensibilities, it's good to remember kids really don't need much to be happy. I wish you could have heard them laughing. We were there for hours.

Holiday party survival tips (Two more dreadful party personalities)

Corey_5

I posted my "Holiday party survival tips" aka "The four dreadful party personalities" on my blog at The Orange County Register. So, if you missed it, you can go HERE to read it and leave a smarmy comment.

I wrote this about a month ago and now feel the need to add two more personalities you don't EVER want to get cornered by at a party.

The instant BFF (just add wine)

Favorite topics of conversation: Nothing seems off-limits. Should she break-up with her boyfriend of seven years? Will he EVER ask her to marry him? In-depth analysis of each of her boyfriend's friends. Why she doesn't use OB tampons anymore.

How to handle: Dead straight honesty! Tell her EXACTLY what you think she should do. Get explicated with your own detailed, gory relationship stories. Give her a "take away" by sketching graphs and charts on a cocktail napkin. For instance "Likelihood he is cheating on you" graph or a chart of her reproductive capability over the next 15 years.

Person with distracting hair or manner

Favorite topic of conversation: This person, has no outstanding personality fault, God bless 'em. They simply have something bewildering or annoying about them that makes it impossible to concentrate on whatever it is they are saying--like a really bad toupee, big power hair, or a constant folding and unfolding of their napkin.

How to handle: Pretend you are in a scene from a Coen Brothers, Christopher Guest or Ben Stiller movie and this person one of the "quirky" characters you're meant to embrace. Feel free to ramp up your own distracting manner and enjoy the party.

The fall issue of Broughton Quarterly

We were listening to the song "Heat of the Moment" by Asia in the car and my four-year-old son asked me, "Mom, why are they saying 'We are the Broughtons?'" Uh-oh, little too much "Broughton" branding going on in our house.

That said, the new Broughton Quarterly is out and cluttering the coffee tables of its subscribers. Take a look: Here. If you do subscribe I will personally deliver your issue four times a year to your home.

These row houses are down in a part of Santa Ana I really like, though I don't know what it's called. Close to Flora Park, The Bowers, and Harvey's. I love the fall colors of the buildings. Seattle Daily Photo took this shot of an orange building and called it "Urban Autumn." When I saw it, swore then and there [and in the comments] that I would find "(Sub)Urban Autumn" in Orange County.

So here it is. These are the sorts of things that occupy my mind while I sit in line-up at my kids' school.

Friday Five: My top five '70s TV crushes

In order of coolness to young girls in the '70s--number five being my biggest crush.

1.) Baretta.
Listen: He loved animals, he carried a gun, and he wore clean, white tanks. What more could a young girl ask for?

2) Stanley "Wojo" Woiciehowicz from Barney Miller.
He had that Polish-American immigrant, big, dopey charm I just couldn't resist (and which served as a prelude to my '80s Lech Walesa crush).

3.) Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce from M*A*S*H.
I was drawn to his banter, confidence, and practical joke prowess. His East Coast, college educated air was magical to California-girl-me.

4.) Michael Landon on Little House on the Prairie. I really love Charles Ingles. Though he would have wanted me to go camping, which is grounds for instantly ending any relationship, but he was still, well--M.E.O.W!

5.) The Fonz.
Like you really need me to list the reasons--"Aaaayhh!"

The_fonz_3

(Yes Fonz, you're three cooler.)

I loved the Fonz so much that when I was about eight-years old I insisted everyone call me "The Suz." I even made signs for my room.

My friend Jana begged me not to post that story about "The Suz" on my blog. She thinks it makes me look like a dork-a-mundo.

Why we Twitter (part 2)

Foolery kicks it off with this: My hair is now long enough to stuff into a banana clip. I have nearly perfected my trashiness; now to go learn how to smoke heavily.

@Foolery Learning to smoke (heavily) WHILE folding your laundry, with hair in banana clip, that would be perfection

@suzbroughton Yeah, and @halushki just reminded me to go to the Wal-Mart to get stirrup pants. Maybe maternity ones, to hide my smokes in.

@Foolery But wouldn't be able to see the stirrups because you have your big white athletic sock on & pushed down to your Reeboks (w/velcro).

@suzbroughton Jeez, it's like you're hiding behind my mirrored closet door when I get dressed in the morning. Down to the pink Reeboks, Suz!

@Foolery I KNOW! Now, put down that Mountain Dew, turn off "Cheaters," and crawl into your sheet-less bed.

@suzbroughton Sheets! What kind of elitist do you think I am?

And there my friends who don't Twitter, is the perfect reason to start.

Sometimes the best way to honor someone is to write a list about them. Especially if that person has a great sense of humor and is terribly fond of lists. At least I read this somewhere--probably in McSweeney's.

So I wrote this list for my husband: Five ways to anger, annoy, or promt eye-rolling from a Green Beret.

Note to self: Don't ever mention my feature in The Register again

I almost forgot to tell this story.

I was at Chick's today looking for a Roller Skating helmet--which they seem to like to call a skateboarding helmet (notice no caps for skateboarding)-- and I asked the man working there what kind of helmet I would need for Roller Derby.

He then said...hold on...It's replaying in my head in slow motion...like a movie... "Well, I just read a feature about Roller Derby in the OC Register and the pictures showed the girls wearing helmets..." At this point it's all a little foggy, but, I'm pretty sure I two-hand shoved him. I'm certain I touched him in some way. Maybe with just a hard poke on his chest and then I squealed, "I wrote that!"

He was very, very disappointingly unimpressed. I expected at least a small nod and a fresh accolade, but he just said, "Really?" And then kind of rubbed his chest where I most defiantly did poke him.

Later as I spastically tried to call my husband in front of the dressing rooms he said, "I showed that article to my wife and she..." I interrupted, "You showed it to your wife? Does she roller skate? Did she like it?"

Obviously sorry he brought it up again he handed me some things I wanted to try on and shut the dressing room door on me.

Did you ever know you are annoying someone, but feel totally powerless to stop yourself? It was like that. But, made way better than that because he brought up something I wrote. I'm doing it right now, aren't I?

I promise, this is the last time I will bring up the Roller Derby article. Totally moving on...

On a related topic, (but not exactly talking about "you know what" again) I got these pom-poms from my husband for our anniversary last week.
