What is the DASH diet? Is this something for Olympic Track and Field athletes? You'll be hearing more about this type of nutrition this year. DASH is the acryonym for the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, (DASH). This is a nutritional approach that has been proven to lower high blood pressure in just 14 days! The DASH diet is based on an eating plan rich in fruits and vegetables, and low-fat or non-fat dairy.
The DASH diet was studied as early as 1976 when 88,500 nurses were followed for 24 years and had their diets assessed according to DASH. Those who had followed the DASH diet had a 24% reduced risk for coronary heart disease, an 18% reduction in stroke related incidents and reduced blood pressure.
Who recommends DASH:
*The National Institutes of Health
*The American Heart Association
*The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
*US guidelines for treatment of high blood pressure and, the DASH diet formed the basis for the new USDA MyPyramid,

Well that's not new
The DASH Diet has been around for an awfully long time. But after years in the diet/nutrition/fitness field, I can say that I've seen a lot of people have success with it. But in the end, it's still a diet and you still have to actually follow it in order to reap benefits. :-)

DASH Diet
Thanks Denise,
Though I've been working as a NP for over 20 years, I had only heard of the DASH diet a short time ago while at a Lipid Disorder training at UCSF. It's good to have your expertise on this.
I've found with my patients that the word "diet" is a conversation killer, so I've been leaning more toward using phrases like: healthy eating plans, or try to find ways to incorporate protective foods such as more servings of vegetables and fruits into your diet.
I'd love to know what has worked for you. Any helpful tips are appreciated.
Be well,

Diet as a dirty word
It's true, the word "diet" can be a complete conversation killer. I had the benefit of working in an area where people came to "us" because they were choosing "to diet". I did steer as clear of the word diet as possible. "Eating plan", "healthy eating", "mindful eating" - that works but the old fall back, is still "diet".
It would be nice if we could easily differentiate between the word diet as noun or as verb, wouldn't it? You aren't dieting, you're changing your diet. But, most people don't see what they're eating today as "diet" - it's just "eating". People are complicated. :-)
DASH Dietary Plan just doesn't cut it. DASH Nutritional Plan doesn't work either. Do it with DASH? hah. Maybe that works?

Diet as dirty word
You're right! It is a "dirty word" and this would make a great book title, Diet: the worst kind of 4 letter word.
And what is up with "watching my weight", I'm just watching the scale and watching my hand quiver as I struggle to choose the carrots and not the chips. It's the on-going dialogue and process.
