Pumpkin Warts
by Denise

I can honestly say that I've never chosen a pumpkin because it was ugly or quirky or non-traditional. I've always chosen a pumpkin because it was a nice color, size or shape. Sometimes the color, size and shape decision was influenced by the fact that I was going to carve it or paint it, but usually not. I just see the pumpkin that looks "good" and that's the one that comes home. Sort of like the Christmas tree that looks good on the lot but once at home, you realize it doesn't fit the house or the stand or any of your actual Christmas tree needs.

It's often taken a good long time to find the perfect pumpkin, there are just too many to choose from and I have to actually pick them up and hold them before I know whether I've found "the one". Tessie blogged about trying to find the perfect pumpkin out of the hundreds and hundreds at the patch. She had some trouble choosing but she did it and it is a nice pumpkin.

My big kids always seemed to choose a pumpkin in the same way but now, times have changed and 9 times out of 10 they choose a pumpkin that looks a little different, a little quirky or downright ugly (though ugly is in the eye of the beholder and all that.)

Pasta Queen's post about warty pumpkins says it all, for me. I'm just not attracted to the warty pumpkin.

Gina, on the other hand, picked a bumpy pumpkin and she likes him quite a bit.

Are you attracted to the bumpy pumpkin or the warty pumpkin? How about the green pumpkin or the white pumpkin? Or are you a traditionalist? And which is better, tall and skinny or short and round?

So many pumpkin-related posts, I'm impressed

Seriously. Bloggers always worry about coming up with topics for their posts. We should all learn from you that it's completely possible to come up with many different angles for every topic.

To answer your questions:

Just like you, I'm definitely a traditionalist.

Or is it a perfectionist?

Traditionalist, I think

I don't think in this case it's perfectionism that's driving our pumpkin preference.

Pumpkins yes... I like them..

I am also a traditionalist. It depends on what I am thinking of carving. If it's a cat or vampire type Jack O Lantern I go for an oblong pumpkin. If Im thinking a traditional face, rounder fits for me.

The warty/bumpy pumpkins remind me of tumors and it's a no go for me. The white and green pumpkins are also a no go. So yeah, it's all about tradition!

No white or green?

Even if you're carving a witch or a zombie or a ghost? Seems like they would work well for those types of themes.

Pumpkin Preferences

Hilarious post title, and this line:

I'm just not attracted to the warty pumpkin.

should win some kind of award.

Jack-o-lanterns must be very orange, wart-free-ish, and either round or a thick oblong--I prefer round and really fat--with no paint used.  Otherwise is just wrong.

I felt very guilty

Blogging that I wasn't attracted to the warty pumpkin. Seems wrong but it's honest. :-)

Used to like mine round

Hmm, who would have thought, one's pumpkin preferences are kind of like a Rorschach test?  I used to always go for the traditional round, but I've found myself open to different shapes the past few years.  Does that mean I'm growing as a person?

Don't mind the warts (my son thinks warts are great - on pumpkins).  I do draw the line at green and white for the color.

Have never painted a pumpkin; always carve a scary face (though I did buy a really cool painted pumpkin one year as part of a fundraiser.  It looked like folk art and lasted way past Christmas.)
