FAKE
Yes, this was funny in the beginning, but when she expressed her idea for a new energy policy or whatever...IT SEEMED LIKE SHE DID NOT COME UP WITH THIS IDEA, on her own. it looked like she was reading from cuecards or whatever their called.
just saying...if she didnt think of this idea on her own, then she shouldnt get praise for it.
And i didnt get the video...the mccain add had nothing to do with suggesting paris be president anything, so i think her overall comback was lame and immature.
It was a very big mistake to show 2 of the biggest bimbos and saddest female celebs out there for a presiental add. and besides.....theres ALOTT more important things going on in the world today, than some stupid commercial add. Us Americans seem to dwell our time on, and fuss about the stupidest things. sure this is just another funny thing to laugh and talk about at work or over a coffee break, but enough is enough.
It seems as if news station, reporters and magazine are desperate for news these days.
We are in a dangerous position right now, and a major global climate change is takng place. Before you know it, Penguins will be almost extinct, because their homes are being melted away. Im an 17 years old, and am disgustd with the economy i live in today. Its just sad that we chose to spend soooo much time on a gay presidential commerical, when there are FAR more importnt things to be discussing about.

That is the sound of my head hitting the desk. The dark times are a coming. I just watched a Paris Hilton video. OMG, she spoke in complete understandable sentences.
Will the non-combatants please clear the area, this is a private fight. (Rough quote from The Quite Man 1952)

it's awesome!!!!
I can't believe Paris can speak like an intelligent individual... And she has every right to do what she did. I gather she didn't get the phone call asking to be in his political campaign ad. And rightly is a bit miffed. I think the commercial should go public. Actually, brilliant.
McCain's camp should have known better than to do that. Though i wonder if Britney can sling it together to sound plausible and do one of her own.... For years we've all secretly thought paris wasn't a total idiot. Maybe now she'll come out of the closet.
what i want to know is when the mud slinging begins does that really sway votes? I sure hope it doesn't. They (the candidates) must think we are all quite stupid when this starts.

Definitely the third horseman
Yeah, I thought I would never see the day when I rooted for something Paris Hilton was involved in. But this is great.
The fourth horseman, by the way, comes when the Cubs win the World Series.

Very funny stuff. It's the first time I've actually paid attention to Paris Hilton. I hope she continues down this path. Thank you for sharing this.

Oooh, kind of feel like
Oooh, kind of feel like voting for her based on her "Pink House" platform. Good for her, not just being used by McCain like that!
Today, I like her. Tomorrow, she will probably decide it's hot to shovel puppies into furnaces. Eh.

Go Paris, Go Paris
Guess that wrinkly white-haired dude will think twice about using some other celebrity's image in his future campaign ads. Paris certainly showed a side of her that had substance other than in her pocketbook. The truth be told -- if it were between McCain and Paris, it'd be tough for me not to start thinking of the White House in a different color.

Zombies, Yoda, and Whores
I am left thinking about how when Paris Hilton has a history of awful behavior we assign her to this stereotype of a dumb starlet... pretty and unlikely to say anything like the words "energy policy". So just showing her image in conjunction with Obama's was meant to be an insult.
But when McCain who also doesn't exactly have a pristine record of behaving well he does not expect to be assigned to a physically stereotyped category. What Paris was doing here is to say "Well, judging you just on how you look, here's what you make me think of" and giving him a negative association from being old and white-haired.
So while I can't exactly approve of anyone saying "old = ugly and out of it and about to fall apart like a zombie", Paris was meeting McCain's rudeness with equal rudeness.
Though, it is not equal rudeness, because while McCain was insulting Hilton, that was just a by-the-way. McCain assumed that HIlton was synonymous with "whore" and with whatever is considered most negative about femininity. Rather than just suggest that Obama is "soft" on some issue and feminizing him that way, the McCain campaign went right for the jackpot and is trying to equate Obama's popularity with whoredom.

Paint it pink, Paris!
Not bad. Could be funnier. I hope in her next speech she mentions wind farms and geothermal energy!
If she did more political videos I'd totally watch them.
See you at the debates, bitches!

Very Funny!
This is very funny. And, who would have thought we could get more information about the candidates from a Paris Hilton video, then from the candidates' own ads? I don't know whether to laugh or cry...Is this really how we are going to elect our next president?
Thanks for the video, I added it to my political blog.

Who Would Have Thought?
That's the longest I've ever listen to what Paris Hilton has to say and it was a delightful surprise.
Who would have thought Paris would choose to show she does actually have some intelligence? I wonder if she'll keep this up? I hope so.
I really hope the politicans have a second think about going with a negative campaign because it only shows disrespect for the voting public and for themselves.
Do you really think Britney will put together her own form of revenge ad? I doubt she has the surrounding support group to enable this to happen but hopefully I'll be surprised about that too.
All the best,
Belinda
Well, I never thought Paris was stupid.

OWM
Paris Hilton Coins the new hot term "OWM" or "OLD WHITE (Haired?)MAN."
Old White (Haired) Men? Have so much to lose here...their ULTIMATE power. Not sure which angle to look at this from that's less than savory for a future candidate the fact that he is equating Obama with a Woman ...cuz what could be more demeaning? The fact that he is undermining what he said he's do when he touted running an "honorable" campaign?... another possible liar to run the OWM run White House? SHOCKING! or the fact that he's equating the American mentality with one that would sit drooling on the couch....duh, and put two and two together, as if Paris and Brittany are the only language we would speak because most of us are so doped up on celebrities lives we've forgotton we have one of our own! I don't know about you but I'm "all set" with OWM. They've "run" all of us for waaaay to long. GO OBAMA.
SEE you at the VOTING BOOTH BeeOTCH!

Interesting responses and
I find it interesting how many people are singing Hilton's praises after judging her harshly for years and years - based on her celebrity status and behavior that they found unappealing or unacceptable.
I also find it fascinating that so many people are slamming McCain for his use of a Paris Hilton image in a negative stereotypical way when they have stereotyped her in very similar ways.
When she says something we're comfortable with, that we like, (particularly if it's to take a shot at someone we don't endorse), then we love her. Otherwise, well... search BlogHer for "Paris Hilton" and see how we've sterotyped her and "used" her...
Fascinating.
Also, amusing video from Hilton. Her PR machine is brilliant (or whoever's machine came up with the idea...)

Social Media Response To A Candidate Is Not
Wrong
It is the other side of Social Media - big corporation or political party insults me and I have the power and the technology to respond back.
Not with an cheesy TV interview on a pseudo news program, or the help of a comedy show (not to say that a writer and a production team wasn't used in the video).
Paris got to control and project her own image and what she wanted to put out there as a response to the McCain ad.
Not that she didn't have the ability in the past. What was projected to me was rich girl for sale, will do anything for attention and $$$. Not my cuppa of tea and I ignored her.
Am I a new fan? Hell no. But I can appreciate that the video was well done, that there was an effort to mildly flip her own rich bimbo image and that this ain't my granny's election.
Ladies, if you've been wronged - define and defend yourself. How is that message wrong?

Good For Her!
I'm really glad that Paris responded. And especially that she responded in a way that makes us believe that she may be more intelligent than most of us have given her credit for. And it was funny too!

Hot Blonde vs. OWHM
No more dumb blonde jokes. Paris rocks in this video. And not just because she is a Celeb, but because her comments made you think. Her energy plan--even with the flying to Maui just to get a tan reference--makes me wonder who she hired for her advisors. Although I think growing old is a good thing, you gotta admit the WHD (white haired dude) campaign ad against Obama's "Celeb factor" was childish.

Paris' Energy Policy
...doesn't include a call for conservation, only for offshore drilling and development of alternatives. So I'm not yet ready to take her seriously as a candidate.
But her writers are the bomb.
Nerd's Eye View
Welll....
I'm not sure that eye-for-an-eye ageism is any more savory or AOK than sexism or celibrity-ism or lower intelligence-ism or blonde-ism. And me, I love a good joke. Still.
I think she could have just video-taped her enegry policy statement and walked away and still ruled the day.
Anyway, FINALLY I have someone I can vote for.

Paris SAID that?
Ok, maybe I am misjudging Paris, underestimating her, what have you... but let me just ask this. Did SHE really say that? I mean, I assumed it was written for her? Maybe I am wrong for assuming she can't think for herself. Some feminist that I am. Blondes unite, bitches!

Too Funny
I thought that was too funny. Maybe the person who
wrote the part about the actual energy solution should contact the candidates,
they may be on to something.
Should have used Carrot Top
I never thought she was stupid. Chick knows branding more than many of the seminar-givers I've listened to.
McCain looks stupid, pissing off Mama Hilton like that. He SO should have used Carrot Top instead. No one defends Carrot Top.

Surprisingly Funny!
I thought it was very funny and I was surprised that either she is that good of an actress or is really smart and plays dumb!
AND I think her energy policy (or whoever wrote that for her!!!) is the best one out there...blends a little bit of everything!!!
Paris Hilton for President? LOL! I don't think so but with the choices we have currently.....
Paris is just the tip of the iceberg!
While her ad was done to respond to McCain's use of her name and image, I LOVE that she took the opportunity to take back what was hers -- her brand, her identity, AND that she took the opportunity to say, "Hey, world, you thought you knew me but you don't."
I'm no huge fan of Paris Hilton, but I think she's given us a great lesson (OMG, did I really just say that??) on how to handle the situation when someone tries to characterize us for their own benefit and against our wishes -- find a smart and sassy way to keep from co-opted.
Imagine what could happen if we all took that page from the Paris Hilton playbook!

Even Paris Hilton can see through McCain!!!
I’m trying to turn the tables on the McCain folks and their stupid
tire gauge stunt.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110277515563
I’m having gauges made and selling them on eBay in
hopes of raising $2300 for Obama (the max contribution). If you are
down, can you please forward this on to other like minded folks. Thanks!
It's funny, but...
Before I even write this I'm wondering if there should be a rule about commenting on Paris Hilton while tired and harried, but here goes what I have to say anyway:
I just didn't have the same response as the folks above. I watched it, chuckled, and even moderately enjoyed hearing her calling John McCain "old dude" - but I didn't think it was brilliant. In fact, I kind of think it just added to the ridiculousness the coverage of this campaign has turned into. The closer November gets, the less funny I think any of this election is. And go ahead and say it, I am a kill-joy. I know. I wish I could say Paris taught me something or showed me something, but really I just saw this girl who loves to be in a bikini speaking what were probably someone else's words. Or maybe they weren't. I don't really care. I just wish we could return to talking about the important stuff - like insuring our children and parents and making sure there are more people who have something to show from working so DAMN hard to get by. I'm happy to listen to Paris in a bathing suit, but maybe in December.
Notions of Identity
It's sad when THESE are our campaign issues
Just a reminder that once again we're back to the old "don't vote for him (and it has to be a him) because he's an elitist" line -- as if McCain isn't just as much an elitist -- rather than actual issues.
Amen, Laracolvin! Why aren't we talking about things that actually affect us in our lives? Things like what McCain's economic policies would do to the middle class. And issues like healthcare, education and infrastructure. These are real issues that have real impacts on all of us "real" people.
YieldingWealth.com
I wouldn't say these are "our campaign
issues"
It's more of a media issue.
What's interesting about this is that a candidate used a celebrity in an ad in an insulting manner and she fired back - not with anger but with humor. Humor which, in part, is making fun of herself! I don't think I'm out of line to suggest that the commenters on this thread are also frequent and thoughtful commenters on actual policy posts.
Personally, I don't mind taking a break from the angst to laugh a little.
By the way, her parents are not too happy about the original ad either. They had donated $2300 to McCain. Although as one of the late night hosts put it, of all the videos she's made, THIS is the one her parents are speaking out against?
Celebrities. They're not like us at all, are they.
Mom-101
Cool Mom Picks.com
Exactly
It's a clever retort to a lazy, lame political ad, and while Paris didn't write it, she saw the humor in participating and did an absolutely perfect job in it.
Now I just need Brittany to do a "Leave Obama Alone" video. ;)
Liz Rizzo
I blog at Everyday Goddess.
Media is distracting from the issues then
I totally get what you say, and I'm not slamming any of the commenters on this post or their opinions about loving the video. And yes, most are thoughtful commenters on policy posts, too. My point was the distraction factor in the context of the election. Sure - Paris should fight back, and I think McCain was showing his campaign's true colors by using her in the first place in an ad. But I just think the whole thing is distracting from the more important conversations - in the media and out - that should be occurring this close to election day and in an election as important as this. Especially in an election as important as this.
Notions of Identity
is nancy pelosi next?
while we're on issues that impact people... how about mr. obama hops
in his SUV and drives a little more towards the mainstream? most of us
are for ALL forms of energy independence. along with conservation,
wind, solar, etc. that also includes nuclear, coal, drilling, etc.
while the paris video was cute, name one contribution paris has made to

I guess she's not as stupid as she pretends to be. You go Paris!
The Wedding Blog
I'm not fooled
Paris is still a fake. She memorized lines given to her. She is still a puppet and is using us for her own personal gain. She's a horrible role model for young women and she deserves no credit for this stunt. I can't believe people are taking her seriously and thinking she actually came up with what she said in the ad. Read the documentaries on how the ad was created given by the actual directors. The only thing she came up with on her own was painting the white house pink. Way to go. I'm disappointed in all the positive press this is getting and sorry I'm even contributing to it, but I had to speak my mind and be the underdog here.
sigh.
